Ideas to Save Money on Your Wedding - Relationships - Weddings

One of the highest reasons for marriage breakdown is debt. So I have set out a number of money saving ideas for your wedding, drawn from personal experience. Ideas to save money as you start your married life are often simple and obvious, but like most things that are obvious they can also be easily overlooked and forgotten. If you have already considered the following ideas then you are well on your way to making saving on the cost of your wedding. Ask friends and family to help, when my wife and I married, my Father made the cake, my Mother decorated it, we used a friend's cream Mercedes as the wedding car and another made my wife's wedding dress. There are however a number of things that we should remember; the wedding dress should be wonderful, the reception should be as enjoyable as possible, being remembered for all the right reasons, and of course the wedding photographs should be the best they can be. It is these three elements that are keys to making the day specia l, unique and keep the memory fresh and vibrant. One of the most expensive parts of the wedding can be the reception or wedding breakfast. Getting married later in the day will save having to feed your guests twice. Although a buffet will often be cheaper than a sit down meal you may however prefer a sit down meal; a simple idea is to cut down on the guest list if you are trying to save the money, and invite others to a reception party after the main reception.Serve a sparkling wine in place of champagne to greet your guests and for the toast; no one will mind or indeed notice! Don't pay a corkage fee but allow each table to open and poor their own drinks. Serve your wedding cake as dessert rather than an expensive choice of desserts. Choose a chocolate or lemon cake in place of the traditional fruit cake and ask your caterers to it serve with fresh cream and berries. The wedding flowers and bride's bouquet add a splash of colour to the day. Choose flowers in season they usual ly cost more if they have to be flown. Talk to the florist and ask about locally grown flowers.Making your own stationery and wedding invitation is a great way you can save money and can be a lot of fun creating something to treasure that is personal to you and your wedding guests. Make your own wedding favours; favour boxes filled with sweets look lovely and don't take long to do, or make cookies and initial them with your names and the date of the wedding. Another idea is to make a donation to a charity of your choice in place of the favours and pace a card informing you guests that you have made a donation on their behalf to the charity of your choice.Oxfam's wedding pages has a fabulous range service of second hand and unworn wedding dresses, but if your heart is set on a new dress, consider having your dress made by a local dressmaker, or as some of my clients have done in the past, have your dress made in China or Thailand! The dresses made in the Far East are often ma de to measure in pure silk, and cost a fraction of the price they would in the west, but remember there may be import duty to pay depending on the laws in your home country. When considering the date for your wedding, avoid Valentine's Day or public holidays, although popular, the costs will go up flowers in particular are more expensive around Valentine's. Some venues also increase the cost of hire around public holidays. Consider getting married on a week day, many venues are much cheaper then at weekends. A beautiful wedding venue need not cost the earth, but you do need to do your research and book as far in advance as possible.I would however recommend you do take out wedding insurance as this can give you peace of mind should anything go wrong. It is inexpensive but I believe an important safeguard for your peace of mind.Choose your wedding photographer with care; those images will live with you forever. Ask if you have will be given the right to copy and print the wedd ing photographs, and if you will be given a CD of high resolution images of your wedding. Also check the photographer is a member of a professional body and remember to ask for to see their membership card; no one who is a member of a professional body would ever object to that, if they do, don't use them. I believe you should pay your photographer for a service and that service should not require you coming back again and again to pay more money.
