Peek Of History at The City Museum - Travel - Travel Reviews

What you see The structure of Town Hall, also known as Rangacharlu Memorial Hall beautified with a lawn is mesmerizing. The high pillars and large doors give it a colonial look and an evergreen coniferous tree adjacent to it adds a scenic touch.

The City Museum is housed in the premises of Town Hall which was constructed in 1884 in the remembrance of Rangacharlu, the first Diwan (Minister) of Mysore. Town Hall is situated close to Mysore Palace.

What you get - The City Museum is devoted to exhibiting Mysore. Cultural, economic, political and social development of Mysore is depicted through several historical documents and photographs. The museum was started by the Government of Karnataka in 2005 to exhibit the growth of Mysore city and preserve its rich cultural history. The collection here includes vintage photographs, documents, paintings and illustrations dated from 1800 to 2000.

As we walked inside the well-maintained and brightly lit-up 1,200 square feet museum we were taken back to a bygone era. One portion displayed photographs and paintings of famous personalities who were instrumental in the development of the city and the other showcased documents, maps, and relics that traced the growth of the city.

Amongst the notable collections we saw a map of Mysore sketched in 1803, photographs of the construction of Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam, paintings of the erstwhile kings of Mysore, photographs and documents of construction of the railway line to the city and of Asia's first hydroelectric power generation station at Shimsha. The museum also provides a peek into the tragic history of Mysore which includes the plague of 1897 that proved fatal for nearly half the population of the city, and the major fire that destroyed the palace and its surroundings. These events are stored in the form of documents and paintings. The museum also has an audio-visual presentation on the city's heritage.

Our verdict The City Museum is worth a visit for its historical value. Its a great place for an outing of fun and education, not just for tourists but localites too. The staff at the City Museum deserves a special praise for the maintenance; they also provide you with clear explanations about the collection. Entry is free and the museum welcomes the public to donate any vintage photographs, documents, paintings and illustrations depicting the cultural, economic, political and social development of the city. There is ample parking space inside the premises.
