Simple Digital Photography Tips to Get You Started Fast - Hobbies - Photography

So, you just bought a new digital camera, and you are eager to get started. Here are a few simple digital photography tips to keep in mind that will help you get off on the right foot.

First of all, read the manual. I know, I know... but that boring little booklet will tell you about all the neat features your new toy has and how to use them. Even the cheapest digital cameras come with a few bells and whistles to make your picture-taking easier, so it makes sense to know what they are up front.

Next, check to be sure that the batteries are fully charged. Nothing is more frustrating than being out in the beautiful countryside, recognizing a great scene worth immortalizing, and discovering that the batteries are dead. If you bought the type that can take regular alkalines, bring an extra set with you when you hit the road.

If you plunked down a fair amount of cash, your new camera probably has some features that allow you to adjust shutter speed, aperture, and so forth. When you are just getting started, however, try using the automatic settings first. When the shutter release is pressed halfway down, the camera will automatically adjust for lighting and focus, allowing you to concentrate on the composition of your photo.

Speaking of composition, one of the oldest concepts in the visual arts is the "rule of thirds". It is very easy to understand. Generally speaking, your snapshots will be more attractive and interesting if the elements in the picture break it up roughly into thirds, either vertically or horizontally.

For instance, imagine a woman standing on a beach, looking out at the ocean toward the setting sun. If you are taking the picture from behind her, the photo would be more interesting if she is framed off to one side instead of in the center, with perhaps a sailboat or the setting sun on the opposite side. The sharp line of the horizon will look better if it is not lined up straight through the middle of the photo, but either a bit lower, to capture more of the sunset, or higher if the woman is your main subject.

Perhaps the best feature of digital cameras is that you never have to buy film. Professional photographers know to take multiple pictures of a subject when they want to be sure of getting at least one good shot. Since there is practically no additional cost if you take three photos of your son's birthday cake instead of just one, go ahead and fire away. This helps assure that you will have at least one great picture from every occasion.

These simple digital photography tips should get you off to a good start with your new camera. Have fun!
